If your cat’s skin issues persist despite the food change, consider ruling out environmental allergies, parasites, or underlying health conditions with your vet. Hi Mike and FYI for other cat parents: At the time this section of comments were originally published (Oct. 2022), Dr. Elsey’s Clean Protein’s new negative reputation had not begun as it was a high quality food when previously added to this list. For background, I feed my cat a quality real meat wet diet but occasionally when I knew I’d be away for his regular dinner time I would put down a little of the kibble to tide him over. That meant a bag lasted a while so it was not until I bought a new bag a while back that the difference in the formula started affecting my cat. After eating the food he’d become lethargic and seemed sick for a day or two and ate very little of his regular food. He used to come running when he heard me even lift the bag out of the cabinet and he stopped dong that. During his sick day or two he’d hide which he never did before and has stopped doing since I tossed the rest of the bag. I will not purchase again and was happy to have this list to peruse for a substitute. I suspect the change is due to adding pork. I’ve had cats my entire adult life and had never seen pet food with pork before although one of the lower down the list foods on this list has pork but I’d never heard of pork in pet food and most pet food does not include it. Please note: a cat will not stalk a hog when roaming around outdoors for sure which should tell us all something!!! I suspect cats are reacting to the change from egg to pork which is a huge change. It is so discouraging when companies do things like that. It is a shame because my cat considered his occasional meal of this food to be party time!! Finally, I support and believe the negative reviews based on my own cat’s reaction. Some cats can deal with the ingredient change but far too many cannot. It would appear that the only cost consideration is that the price increased considerably with the negative dietary change!

Following up on the editorial response to my comment, claiming there are no raw uncooked products recommended in this article.

A direct quote from your #4 pick: “This kibble also features a coating of freeze-dried raw chicken for enhanced nutrition and taste.” Raw chicken is precisely what we are supposed to be avoiding.
And again with your #5 pick: “Whereas most kibble is extruded, this food is air-dried. A twin-stage dehydration technique destroys pathogenic bacteria while retaining nutrients.” This process is sufficient to kill most bacteria, but is NOT necessarily sufficient to kill all viruses.
How can you claim that you only recommend fully cooked foods when you blatantly describe raw food items in your list?
